Purpose of the Right to Information Act, 2005

The RTI Act, 2005 was enacted to ensure transparency in the functioning of government and public authorities. It empowers citizens to seek and obtain information regarding the decisions, actions, and functioning of public officials and departments. The central idea is that a well-informed citizen is better equipped to hold the government accountable, thereby fostering good governance.

Citizens have the right to know how and why decisions are made, especially when such decisions affect public interest or individual rights. This Act supports the democratic process by enabling informed participation.

Definition of 'Information' under the RTI Act
